November’s Theme - Creativity
As we ease into the quieter, colder months, it’s been an opportunity to reflect on creativity and the places where we find the most joy.
I’ve always found winter hard for a number of reasons - it’s colder, darker, and the flowers are asleep. And because of that, I have typically sought out sunnier skies in other places around the world, taking the opportunity to seek out warmth.
This time last year, I was preparing for a flowering overseas adventure in New Zealand, and was looking forward to exploring creativity in flowers in a new location. The trip did just that, by meeting growers, florists, and other creatives. I felt inspired and managed to 'shortcut' the winter blues. This year, however, I’ve had more opportunity to internally reflect on how we best find creativity when it’s quiet. With fewer distractions and less external stimulation, the winter months have forced me to turn inward and explore the depths of my own imagination.
Taking a soft step away
That’s what I’m doing this winter. Allowing for the opportunity to be reflective, peaceful and quiet.
In the absence of vibrant blooms and bright sunshine, I have discovered a different kind of inspiration - one that comes from introspection and solitary contemplation. It's during these quiet moments that I have found the space and time to nurture my creativity in new and unexpected ways.
Instead of seeking external sources to ignite my imagination, I have learned to harness the inherent beauty of simplicity and stillness. Winter, with its serene ambiance, has become my canvas, allowing me to watch the ethereal shades of decaying, frostbitten plants in solitude. In these moments, I have discovered the brilliance of my own thoughts, the vivid hues of my dreams, and the delicate nuances of my emotions.
By embracing the quietude of winter, I have come to realise that creativity can thrive in the absence of external commotion. It blooms in the whispers of the wind, the gentle crackling of a fireplace, and the soft glimmers of starlight on a snow-covered landscape. So while winter may be challenging and draining in various ways, it has also become a season of profound artistic growth and introspective exploration for me. As the outside world slows down and retreats into hibernation, I have learned to embrace the stillness and unearth the untapped potential within myself. In the midst of winter's icy grip, I have found warmth in the cocoon of my own imagination, and there, amidst the frost-kissed tendrils of my thoughts, creativity thrives.
