Fisherman’s Bay Gardens
Fisherman’s Bay Gardens is iconic. A hidden coastal peninsula, which is situated close to the quaint French settlement of Akaroa, near Christchurch. It’s no exaggeration that I’ve wanted to come to these gardens for years, and it’s been high on my New Zealand bucket list ever since I first discovered the beautiful landscape (and sunrises) on Instagram.
The gardens are raw, casual, with a playful feel, and by chance we got them all to ourselves as the autumn season was very nearly over. Whilst wandering through the various sections, we found such character within the garden and its flowers (and its mushrooms). The most incredible element of this space has to be the view, with a breath taking coastal backdrop that really can’t be expressed in words.
I was very grateful when Jill & Richard (the owners) came out for a personal hello, breaking from their afternoon task of baking a tarte tatin with the apples from their orchard. I really felt their warmth as they explained their inspiration, love of growing, plans for the future and of course we spoke about our adventures with flowers at their core.
Visits to the garden are prebooked online and cost $15 NZD (~£7.50). There’s hot drinks included in the entry price, plus you can take as much time as you need to explore the different spaces.
Some of my favourite pictures from the day are posted below:
And I filmed a little video of the day too:
If you ever take a trip to New Zealand, definitely add this one to your list.
