Gresgarth Hall & Gardens
I can’t count the number of times I’ve been past Gresgarth Hall and Gardens, yet for some reason I’ve never visited.
Growing up just around the corner from Caton, this was high on my list of spots to explore. Once a month they open to the public to showcase their beautiful garden for the day, and luckily for me September’s coincided with one of my oldest friend’s weddings back in my hometown, so I squeezed in a visit with Becky from Erda Botanicals.
The gardens cost £12 to enter, and you are able to take your time exploring the wide variety of different areas. A beautiful home that dates back to 1330 is visible from many angles (although you can’t go inside) including from the small lake, rambling brooks and bridges. Plus there’s plenty more to see! My favourite spots to wander included through the kitchen gardens, with autumnal pumpkins and vintage greenhouses, the playful cobbled pavements by Maggie Howarth, which weave between the herbaceous borders, and listening to birds within the woodland areas.
