Sustainability Series 01: Considering Bryonia’s Environmental Impact

All our behaviour and purchases have an impact on the environment… whether that be food, clothing, or flowers.

I have taken a lot of time to consider Bryonia’s impact on the planet, as flowers are a natural product which deserve to be respected and treated as such.

By working as a ‘Seasonally Led’ florist, I choose work with flowers that are naturally occurring around us here in the UK.

But recently, I’ve become aware that I could work to be a better resource and information hub for my customers and fellow florists. By continuing to digest the available fact based research and key voices speaking up about sustainable floristry, I hope to share this in a safe and easy to understand way through my Journal pages.

There’s are some key topics that I hope to provide a narrative to over the coming months as part of my Sustainability Series:

  • Sustainable & Local Flowers - Supply vs. Demand

  • Valentine’s Day Flowers

  • ‘Enhanced’ Products - Bleached, dyed, glittered & glued

  • Flower Foam - Need I say more…

  • Carbon offsetting

  • Wholesalers - From mislabelling, to inflexibility and British offerings

  • Artificial extending of flower vase life

  • Greenhouse gases & flowers

  • Eco minded wedding flowers and how to approach this

  • Greenwashing in the flower industry

By discussing these and more, I hope to help ensure you’re making informed choice about whether to continue buying these products or if you’re a florist, whether to continue using these processes in your business.
